In his book The Worcester Lunch Car Company, Richard Gutman wrote that Charles P. Gemme "devoted his life to the design and construction of diners. Gemme was responsible for every Worceser car built by the company at the intersection of Quinsigamond Avenue and Southbridge Street. The company built its first wagon in 1906 and 651 diners later, closed up in 1961.
This exclusive Roadside Online feature makes publicly available for the first time copies of Charlie Gemme's drawings he made with each order for a new diner. These astounding illustrations includes historically significant information such as the diner's owner, its delivered location and date, and notations of the new diner's custom features. On occasion, Gemme would also note the diner's transport to successive locations and its new owner.
These notebooks keep the diners arranged in order of their serial numbers, and at times include detailed estimating calculations.
We make these available for public viewing to both benefit existing owners of some of these wonderful cars and for the general enjoyment of diner fans everywhere.
